Rotarians Rhonda Poppen and Robin Scharding Act as Guardians for Flight of Honor

Thoughts on the day from Rhonda Poppen
Tom Brokaw had it right.  The men and women of WWII WERE “The Greatest Generation.”  To be honest I had never given it the thought I should have until today.  I spent the day with 120 men between the ages of 85 and 95 on a trip to DC and I will never forget it.  I heard stories of Model T’s that you had to drive backwards uphill when you were running low on gas.  I listened as some commented on the fact that we were taking a trip on a German-made Airbus 321 and they went to war to fight the Germans (ironic).  I watched as they cried when HUNDREDS stopped and thanked them for their service.  I was amazed at one’s courageous stories of sailing the Atlantic in a 40-foot Coast Guard vessel, intercepting subs, and calling for back-up to protect our coasts.  These men were my age or a little older when I was born and their humor and insight is a proven, vintage, “class act.”

As Mike said on the drive home from the airport tonight “Kenny, we got our day today!”  Bands played for them… flags waved for them… police escorts stopped all Beltway traffic for them…  children greeted them… Bob Dole made time for them… fire engines made a water archway for them…  soldiers in dress saluted them!!  Everywhere we went, THEY were the celebrities and they deserved every minute of it.  It was overwhelming and I am thankful to have been a part.  A HUGE thanks to my fellow Rotarians for putting this event together for so many years.  It went like clockwork.  You are doing something great for the greatest.

Merl Hamilton Selected as Cabarrus Rotary’s 2011 Distinguished Rotarian

2011 Distinguished Rotarian Merl Hamilton

The Rotary District 7680 Distinguished Rotarian Awards were first awarded during the 1993-94 Rotary year at the District 7680 Conference. Each of the clubs in District 7680 has the opportunity to honor a member of their club for a distinguished tenure as a Rotarian. The award should be presented to a Rotarian who has exemplified “Service Above Self” in his/her daily life as a Rotarian and a member of his/her community.

This year, the Rotary Club of Cabarrus County has selected Merl Hamilton to receive this award. Merl has served the community in many capacities and is the former City of Concord Police Chief and the current Assistant City Manager.

Merl has been a steadfast leader in our club and in the community and we are proud to recognize him with this most deserving honor.
